| Abstract | iii PREFACE In December 1992 the parallel computer KSR1-32 from Kendall Square Research i n W al-tham/Mass. was installed at the University Computing Center. The installation was preceded by a v ery short time of approval after the decision for the KSR1 was made by the University of Mannheim. Here, true thanks go to the Ministerium fr Wissenschaft und Forschung (MWF) in Stuttgart, the Kommission ffr Rechenanlagen (KfR) of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) in Bad Godesberg as well as to the Wissenschaftsrat in Bonn. I a l s o w ant to thank the manufacturer KSR as well as Siemens Nixdorf, with whom we h a ve signed the nal contract because of SNI's cooperation with KSR. Both companies rapidly drove forward the installation of this supercomputer without much bureaucracy. N e v er before had we experienced a less than 4 hour installation the way it happened on December 9, 1992 here at the Computing Center. By the end of 1992 parallel computers had already outgrown the stadium of being solely objects for research in computer science and research institutes. Because of this MWF within the framework of BelWW the researchhnet of BadennWWrttemberg had started the initiative Parabll Parallel Computers in BelWW with the goal to install parallel computers in several university computing centers in order to gather knowledge of these innovative computer typs promising a great future. Because of this, one of the procuring demands made by MWF was to install diierent architectures in Baden-WWrttemberg in order to gather knowledge on a broad level. Presently the following parallel computers are installed at the university c o m p u t i n g centers in Baden-WWrttemberg: Intel Paragon XP/S5 in Stuttgart, MasPar MP 1216 in Karlsruhe, KSR1132 in Mannheim and nCube2S in Ulm. Being one year in use at the University Computing Center in Mannheim we present the following report of the KSR1. This covers the attachement of the computer into the computing center and into the university b a c kbone net as well as the experience during operation. The center of attention will be the experience of users with KSR1. These users come from the University of Mannheim and other universities in BadennWWrttemberg via BelWW , from some universities from Germany via the science net WIN as well as from neighboring countries. Little use of the KSR1 was made by the industry. Quite a few projects … |
