| Abstract | The objective of this paper is to make a ethnobotanical and ethnopharmacological study of Vitex agnus castus L (Verbenaceae), knowed in North Brazil as Alecrim-de-Angola. This paper summarize informations about its international history. Because agnus castus is native to Greece and Italy, it was well-known by the ancients. The ancients valued Vitex highly for many health problems. Vitex was highly revered as one of the most useful medicines of the times. Vitex belonged to the official medicinal plants of antiquity and is mentioned in the works of Hippocrates, Dioscorides and Theophrast. The first specific medicinal indications can be found in the writings of Hippocrates, 4 th Century B. C. Its greatest use lies in normalizing the activity of female sex hormones, and it is thus indicated for dysmenorrhoea, premenstrual stress and others disorders related to hormone function. It is especially beneficial during menopausal changes. Several studies indicate Vitex can help control acne in teenagers, both among young women and men. Vitex agnus castus is used in Belem, Brazil, for social and religious purposes by the cultural descendants of african people. 1. Introducao |
