| Abstract | Background: Aside the well known positive effects of oxygen in health there is growing evidence that links reactive oxygen species to the pathophysiology of several neonatal diseases. Locally we perceived unwarranted oxygen use in routine neonatal care of healthy neonates. The objective of this study was to determine the frequency of use in this setting in two hospitals in the locality. Methods: Data collected from medical records of newborns in the period from January to December 2008 in two tertiary care hospitals, hospital “A”, private and Hospital “B”, public. In those newborns considered healthy info about administration of oxygen during the fi rst six hours of life, gender, mode of delivery and birth weight were registered. Results: Oxygen was administered to 1739/1907 (91.2%) of healthy infants during the study period. The proportion of oxygen use was not equal between hospitals, at “A” oxygen was administered to 465/633 (73.4%) and at “B” to everyone, that is 1274/1274 (100%) healthy neonates received unneeded supplementary oxygen. Conclusions: Locally the practice of oxygen administration during the postnatal period was very common and without any apparent reason. |
