| Abstract | Introduction: Type II diabetes mellitus is a public health problem which involves not only adults but also children and adolescents in an alarming way. It has been estimated that the prevalence of type II diabetes in children and adolescents in some populations has increased 10 times over the last decades. Objective: To determine whether the obesity is a risk factor for type II diabetes mellitus in adolescents patients aged 10 to 19 years at the Cayetano Heredia National Hospital. Methodology: A casecheck up study (24 cases and 48 controls). A 10 to 19-year-old patient with a diagnosis of TIIDM was defined as a case, and a patient aged 10 to 19 years who were not diagnosed with TIIDM was defined as chek-up, but who presented risk factors and came to the outpatient clinics of gastroenterology and pneumology in the same period as the cases lasted. Results: Obesity was present in 88% of the cases and in 63% of the check ups, obese patients were 4.2 times more likely to have TIIDM. In preadolescents with diabetes, 83% had obesity; while in adolescents 89%. Female patients with obesity were 7.7 times more likely to develop TIIDM than the male group. Conclusions: Obesity becomes a factor associated to TIIDM in patients aged 10 to 19 years in a local hospital. |
