| Abstract | SUMMARY This paper stresses the apparently widespread acceptance of research ethics committees and distinguishes between the activities of these bodies and their actual function. The latter is sometimes obscured and, as experience shows, poorly understood by members of the research community, funding agencies, and public at large. Comments are provided on selected aspects of ethics in psychiatric research involving human subjects, with reference to pharmaceutical industry-supported multicentric studies. |
