| Abstract | The present work has as a goal to determine through an in vitro analysis if there exists any antimicrobial effect of the hydroalcoholic guava leaf extract (Psidium guajava) on Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans strains. For the microbiological test, 15 Petri dishes with chocolate agar were used after being inoculated with the bacteria in study; after that, white paper discs impregnated with 20μl of the hydroalcoholic guava leaf extract in concentration to 50%, 70% and 100% were set; for the positive control, chlorhexidine to 0,12% was used, and physiological serum for the negative control. Later, the Petri dishes were taken to an anaerobiosis jar at a temperature of 37°C. The results, according to the inhibition halos showed the following averages: chlorhexidine to 0,12% (12,53mm), hydroalcoholic guava leaf extract to 100% (10,07mm) hydroalcoholic guava leaf extract to 75% (7,53mm), hydroalcoholic guava leaf extract to 50% and physiological serum (6mm), both at 24 hours and 48 hours. It is concluded that the Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans strain presents mild to moderate sensitivity towards the hydroalcoholic guava leaf extract in concentrations to 75% and 100%. DESCRIPTIVE TERMS: Antimicrobial effect / Psidium guajava / Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans. |
