| Abstract | Objective: To describe the prevalence of vaginal, rectal and urine group B Streptococcus (GBS) colonies as well as their serotypes in a population of pregnant women and the stability of GBS carriage with time and advancing gestation. Design: Descriptive and cross-sectional study. Material and methods: From March 1999 to December 2001, continuous observations were made on 138 pregnant women who received prenatal care in Family Practice Center “Dr. José Castro Villagrana” in Mexico City. But 98 patients concluded the study. Cultures were obtained three times during gestation and one in the delivery. GBS were confirmed and serotype by latex agglutination. Results: 20 patients were colonized with GBS in any stage of the pregnancy and/or delivery for a prevalence of 20.4%. We also reported an even distribution of GBS serotypes: I= 77.4%, II = 16% and III = 6.4%. Conclusions: Although the incidence and clinical manifestations of invasive disease are well described, little is known about the natural history of GBS colonies and also few epidemiologic information is available in Latin-American. Due to the ease with which the SGB is acquired and/or it is lost during the pregnancy. We conclude that culture taken in the course of the pregnancy are of limited usefulness in predicting the presence or absence from the GBS at the time of delivery. |
