| Abstract | Performance measurement i s a strategic and integrated approach to delivering susta ined success to organizations by p roving the performance of the people who work in them an d by developing the capabilities of teams and individual contribu tors. This study sought to determ ine the challenges experienc ed in the process of perform ance measurement in Kenya pow er and lighting Company Lt d. A descriptive research w hich involved collecting data fro m 150 of the 2097 staff w ho go through the perform ance measurement process was car ried out. Descriptive research portrays an accurate profile of persons, events, or situations. The study used P rimary data which was colle cted using structured questionnaire s administered through drop a nd pick method. The data collected was anal ysed using descriptive statis tics such as mean scores to show frequency and graphs to show percentages. The research co ncluded that the most signifi cant challenges experienced were non alignment of performanc e with rewards, setting achie vable yet challenging targets, failur e to involve staff in setting ta rgets, accessing the right data , Jack of ownership by union staff , lack of monitoring tools, employees ' fear of measure ment, aligning targets to corporate s trategy and lack of resources. The study recommends that f or successful performance me asurement the challenges mu st be determined and strategies to counter and solve them frame d. Of particular importance i s the building of a knowledgea ble staff that appreciates and contributes to perform ance measurement process. It also recommends that staff mem bers should be involved in s etting targets so as to ensure tha t they fully accept the set targets and work towards their achievement. IT Systems sh ould be implemented to cap ture and evaluate data. Ade quate resources should also be avai led to ensure that targets are m et. The reward system should also be aligned with the performan ce so as to increase productiv ity. |
