| Abstract | The growing demand for energy in the developing world has received increasing attention among energy analysts and policy makers in recent years. The reason for such attention is very simple. The rapid growth in energy demand in developing countries may soon become a key factor affecting the world energy situation. Although there is no doubt about the attributability of the growing energy demand to economic growth, little is known about their quantitative relationships in developing countries. There are, of course, other factors which may be important demand determinants in developing countries. An understanding of these factors will improve our ability to forecast future energy demand in the developing world and to assess its impacts on the world energy balance. The purposes of this study are to analyze the historical relationships between energy demand and economic growth and to make statistical inference about important energy elasticities for the selected 15 developing countries. There exist only a few studies attempting to estimate energy demand based on intercountry variations among developing countries. Choe (1978) estimated simple aggregate energy demand equations using data from 35 countries for 1960-75. In his study, |
