| Abstract | We study trichomes in adults leaves of 17 species of the genus Solanum L. from South America, aiming to contribute to the knowledge of the morphological variation as an approximation to a more detailed cataloging. The studied species are distributed in the sections Brevantherum: 11 species, Dulcamara: 2 species, Holophylla: 3 species y Pachyphylla: 1 species. We recognize the following kinds of trichomes: simple, glandular; with two rays in the shape of T, V or Y, stellate and dendritic. For the stellate and dentritic kinds, it can be distinguished several types; for the dendritic forms we propose: coral-like-fruticose, coral-like-fruticose-articulate and arborescent-subdicotomic types. In relation with the pubescence in the abaxial surface five types of indumenta are recognized: arachnoid, arborescent-like; stellate-pilosous, stellate-tomentose and floculose. The arachnoid and stellate-tomentose indumenta are associated to the total coverage of leaf surfaces. References to the ecological space of occurrence and altitude range are given. |
