| Abstract | This paper investigates the potential and possibilities of use, for purposes of strengthening or rehabilitation of timber beams, of carbon fiber laminates glued to the tensile side with an epoxy resin. In an attempt to improve the effectiveness of the composite system so constituted, a prestressing technique was used which is easy to be implemented on site. The CFRP laminates were also used for the rehabilitation of beams previously loaded to failure. Given the variability of the failure surface in the real beams, a set of beams was sawn, at the central span section, from the bottom face up to the neutral axis. Both these and the actually collapsed beams were rehabilitated and tested again, and the results compared. An experimental campaign with small-size specimens was also undertaken, in order to inestigate the shar strength of the timber-CFRP glued interface. The main conclusion is that the system is very effective under dry conditions, though the influence of effects such as creep and cyclic loading requires further investigation.
