| Abstract | Aerobic metabolism and nitrogen fluxes at the water·sediment interface in the south·west lagoon of New-Caledonia. Methods and raw data. Flux chambers were used to study aerobic metabolism of the benthos and nitrogen fluxes at the water-sediment interface in relation with benthic parameters of the south-west lagoon ofNew Caledonia. Triplicate incubations were carried out in darkness during 2 or 3 hours, on twelve stations allocated to the three soft bottom types previously described in the lagoon by Chardy et al. (1988): mud deposits, grey sand bottoms and white sand bottoms. PVC tubes (0.2 m2) were pushed into the sediment and closed with clear acrylic hemisphere to trap a known volume of water (about 60 1). A calibrated polarographic electrode connected to the surface was placed in each enclosure for continuous oxygen recording. Samples for dissolved nitrogen analysis were withdrawn by SCUBA diving, every 30 mn with syringues. Ammonium, nitrate+nitrite and dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) were immediatly analysed on board by Technicon Industrial methods. Samples for DON were submitted to U.V. oxidation before analysis. At the end of incubations, samples were collected in the enclosed substrate for analysis on sediment parameters (porosity, granulometry, organic matter) and living organisms (ATP, plant pigments, meiobenthic densities and macrobenthic biomass. This paper presents methods and raw data obtained from the study. |
