Innervations of median preoptic neurons projecting to the paraventricular hypothalamic nucleus by nerve terminals immunoreactive to β-endorphin

| Abstract | Parasympathetic innervation of the tongue blood vessels and lingual gland was investigated in the cat with the aid of whole mount acetylcholinesterase histochemistry (WAChE) and horseradish peroxidase-conjugated wheat germ agglutinin (WGA-HRP) methods. In the WAChE preparations, under dissecting microscope, darkly stained microganglia were constantly detected in the tongue (lingual ganglia), in the floor of the oral cavity infero-lateral to the root of the tongue (perilingual ganglia), near the origin of the nerve to the submandibular gland (oromandibular ganglion), in the canahculus for chorda tympani (chorda tympani ganglion), in the connective tissue around the main otic ganglion (accessory otic ganglia), and in the sphenotympanic fissure (sphenotympanic ganglia). After injections of WGA-HRP into the anterior half of the tongue, retrogradely labeled ganglion neurons were observed in all these ganglia as well as the otic ganglion. The labeled neurons were almost small, ranging in long axis diameter from IO to 3.5 pm. Injections into the posterior part resulted in labeling in larger ganglion neurons as well as the smaller. The posterior part of the cat tongue was rich in exocrine glands but none was found in the anterior half. The results indicates that the cat tongue receives multiple parasympathetic supplies from many parasympathetic ganglia by way of the facial or glossopharyngeal nerve, and that the tongue blood vessels are innervated by smaller neurons, and the exocrine glands by the larger neurons. |
