| Abstract | This article reports an effort to characterize Brazilian innovative firms. This characterization was done based on PINTEC -2000 (Industrial Research of Technological Innovation-2000) information. To do it, it was employed statistical non-parametrical procedure, which inform that to distinct between innovative and non-innovative firms, the four main distinctive factors were the export orientation, the size of the firm, and the industrial sector effect. To the process innovation to the market the main characteristics pointed out were the export orientation industrial sector effect. To the product innovation was showed that the foreign capital origin and the export orientation were the main characteristics to distinct between the impact of the innovation.
