| Abstract | Objective: To determine if the BMI is associated factor with periodontal disease in the population over 35 years in three different geographical areas of Colombia (Bogota, Medellin, Cali). Design: Analytical cross-sectional observational study. Location: Dental Clinics Pontificia Universidad Javeriana, the Colombian School of Medicine, Universidad de Antioquia and the Universidad del Valle. Population: 667 patients over 35 years with at least 14 remaining teeth. Measurements: periodontal clinical assessments were made in full mouth, body mass index (BMI) was measured. Periodontitis were classified according to the American Academy of Periodontology 1996, patients without periodontitis were taken as controls, as exposure variable BMI, and as outcome variable, the periodontal diagnosis. Results: Data from 667 patients were collected between January 2011 and January 2012, 223 (33,43%) had no periodontitis, 256 (38,38%) had mild to moderate periodontitis, and 188 (28,19%) had advanced periodontitis. Patients classified as obese accounted for 10% of the 667 patients evaluated. By modeling with ordinal logistic regression generalized nonproportional hazards adjustment co-variables involved, association between BMI and periodontitis was found, specifically in obese patients compared to patients BMI under 30Kgr / m2 OR=4,5 [IC95%:1,7-11,5]. |
