| Abstract | In the middle of the Mayombe forest, renzains of smelting, dating from 2,110&60 B.P. are the oldest known traces of the Early Iron Age recognized with certainty iii the Congo, and are alinost as ancient as those known from Gabon and the Cameroon. The presence of charcoal of woody savanna species, traces of erosion phenomena and the speed at which iron smelting spread in Central Africa all argue in favour of a greater extension of savanna arozrizd 2,000 B.P. in the Mayombe than at present. A considerable part of this raiil forest is more recent than was believed. This fact niay e.xplain the occiirrence of a special vegetation type: the Marantaceae open forest. This could also be at the origiii of intermediate 6I3C values found in the deep Iiori-~ons of the soils in this area. ' |
