| Abstract | 4 Abstract Humans evolved in social groups and are adapted for group living. In 5 this chapter, we review recent behavioral, physiological, and neuroscience research 6 that provides the psychological and neural architecture for collectively shared 7 representations of the world – the “group mind.” We describe how collective 8 identities structure a wide range of human cognitive processes, from rapid evalu9 ation and face memory to mental state attribution and representations of physical 10 distance. This research underscores how psychological and neural processes under11 lying human cognition are context-dependent, dynamic, and flexibly shaped by 12 motivational states, rather than inevitable, reflexive, and fixed. |
