| Abstract | In this study we aimed to characterize the radial variation of the anatomical features, specific gravity, extractives, lignin and holocellulose content of Piptadenia gonoacantha wood (pau-jacaré) from the natural forest and to investigate the correlations between wood characteristics. Standard techniques in anatomy, physical properties and chemistry of wood were employed; data were evaluated by analysis of variance, multiple comparison tests and linear regression analysis. The results showed a significant increase in vessel diameter, rays height and width and decrease in ray frequency from pith to bark. Specific gravity differed between the radial positions. There was a significant increase in extractives content from pith to bark. There were positive correlations between vessel diameter and rays height with extractives and between holocellulose content and vessel frequency. |
