| Abstract | Background In 2007, a total of 226.6000 people were diagnosed with stroke. An important consequence that stroke patients have, is that they run the risk to become inactive in daily life. This has several effects on the patients, including faster fatigue which causes the condition to worsen even more. In order to assess fatigue in patients after stroke in the chronic phase during different intensities of effort, the Borg scale is mostly used. To assess the condition of patients, the VO2max is used. The practice shows that patients are more likely to terminate the walk test because of a bad gait and fatigue, therefore not achieving the VO2max. As a result, not the maximum effort is achieved which corresponds to the Borg scale scores. To make the Borg-scale useful at peak exercise testing in patients after stroke in the chronic phase, the Borg scale scores are related to the VO2peak in this study to investigate whether there is a correlation between these measurements. The question is whether there is a relationship between the subjective Borg scale and the objective VO2peak during maximal exercise in patients after stroke in the chronic phase. Method: In this cross-sectional study with 11 participants is a gas analysis performed during the maximum exercise test. Immediately after the test, the Borg scale is completed. This study will use the VO2peak measurements and the scores on the Borg scale. For the statistical analysis SPSS is used. Relationships between the different instruments are calculated using the Spearman's rank correlation. Results: From the correlation analysis it appears that there is a very weak correlation between the Borg scale and VO2peak (R = 0.113).This correlation is not significant (p = 0.742). Conclusion: There is a very weak relationship between the Borg scale and VO2peak. In order to better identify fatigue with the Borg-scale in patients after stroke in the chronic phase during a maximal exercise test, further research is required. |
