| Abstract | We present the result of a high resolution 12 ks Chandra HRC-I observation (FWHM≈ 0.5 ′′) of the starburst galaxy IC342 taken on 2 April 2006. We identified 23 X-ray sources within the central 30 ′ × 30 ′ region of IC342. The X-ray nucleus was resolved into 2 sources and one of the source, was extended with a spatial extent of 9.4 ′′ (82 pc) × 14.6 ′′ (127 pc). From the astrometric registration of the X-ray image, the X-ray nuclear source was very near the galaxy center and thus we concluded that the source was not an ultraluminous X-ray source and must instead be associated with the nucleus. The HRC-I observation also revealed a faint point-like source (L X = 5.1 × 10 37 erg s −1) near the nucleus for the first time. We also analyzed astrometrically corrected optical Hubble Space Telescope and radio Very Large Array images for comparing with the Chandra HRC-I data. The X-ray emission at the center was surrounded by star formation regions that were dominated by bright radio emission ∼ 4 ′′ west and east to a nuclear star cluster. Furthermore, the X-ray emission traces the Hα emission well and was nonaxisymmetric, with a slight north-south elongation. This observation enabled us to relate the X-ray emissions of the galaxy and the nuclear star cluster, and hence starburst activities. |
