| Abstract | The worse symptoms of the carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) occur at night. Despite that, the relation between CTS and the sleep characteristics of those patients have yet to be systematically described by objective methods, such as through conduction studies (ENMG) and polysomnography (PSG). Female patients were selected which had been diagnosed with CTS through ENMG and had undergone polysomnographic exam between June 2011 and June 2015. Patient data were organized in accordance with CTS severity, as measured by distal motor latency of the median nerve of the affected hand or hands, and their polysomnographic data were described and compared. 42 patients were enrolled in this study. The Arousal Indexes (AI) of the patients with severe CTS were not significantly different from those with mild or moderate CTS (p = 0,1469). Desaturation Time (DT) was significantly higher in the severe CTS group (p = 0,0233). Alterations of the Sleep Efficiency were more common among patients with bilateral mild CTS. Sleep architecture was equally altered among all patients. The presence of Sleep Apnea was the same whatever the CTS severity. As CTS severity diagnosed through ENMG increases, higher is the probability of sleep desaturation, though no decline of sleep fragmentation was found. Further studies are required to ascertain causal relations between AI, DT and CTS severity. |
