| Abstract | Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are useful in ancient landscapes study. GIS can offer a wide range of analytical methods which make easier the understanding of the spatial dimension of social formations and its historical dynamics. In other words, GIS are a helpful tool to comprehend the rationality that is inherent to a community’s spatial conduct. There are numerous software solutions that process and analyze spatial information. Nonetheless, in this paper we will focus on the advantages of free and open-source software to the archaeological study of landscapes. As an example, it will be shown how the cost-distance modelling can contribute to an archaeological locational problem: the assessment of sites location according to the natural resources available in their neighbouring. The experimental approach has been applied to Pre-Roman and Roman “castros” in La Cabrera (Leon). It will also be detailed how to create isochronic segments based on pedestrian anisotropic costs, and the great benefits of using GRASS GIS to implement this sort of spatial analyses. |
