In this work we study the sphagni of the Scheuchzerio-Caricetea nigrae (Nordhag. 1937) Tx. 1937 communities in the southern part of the Pyrenees. The study comprises the following points: Analysis of the sphagni of every plant community, research of their preferences for the different associations and ecologica! characterization of such associations based on testing the pH and the ionic content of the interstical water. We may underline that some sphagni show affinities with certain plant communities: Sphagnum contortum Schultz for Drosera longifolia L. communities, Sphagnum teres (Schimp.) Angstr. for Caricetum nigrae Br.-Bl. 1915, Sphagnum subnitens Russ. & Warnst, for Calluno-Sphagnetum subnitentis ined. and Sphagnum compactum DC. for communities dominated by Scirpus caespitosus L. Furthermore, we may mention some species which, without being particularly abundant in any community, show certain prefferences towards wet communities, such as Sphagnum sub secundum Nees, Sphagnum platyphyllum (Braithw.) Warnst, or Sphagnum auriculatum Schimp, towards Caricetum nigrae Br.-Bl. 1915 and Narthecio-Scirpetum caespitosiBr.-Bl. 1948.
