Abstract	RESUMO. A influencia do uso profilatico de Syzygium cumini sobre a eficiencia diabetogenica do aloxano em ratos foi avaliada neste estudo. A infusao das folhas da planta foi oferecida como substituto da agua, antes e durante a administracao do aloxano. Apos 16 dias de tratamento profilatico a glicemia do grupo T estava significativamente maior que a do grupo C (p< 0,004). Sob estas condicoes foi realizada a inducao do diabetes nos dois grupos experimentais. Os niveis glicemicos do grupo T sofreram uma elevacao de 49,86 ± 20,34 % em relacao ao periodo anterior a inducao. Esta taxa foi significativamente maior no grupo C (p< 0,03), atingindo um indice de 177,96 ± 47,30 %. Estes resultados indicam que a ingestao ad libitum de Syzygium cumini tem um efeito hiperglicemiante em ratos nao-diabeticos e efeito protetor contra acao diabetogenica do aloxano. SUMMARY. “Protective Effect of Syzygium cumini Against Alloxan-induced Diabetes Mellitus in Rats”. The study evaluated the effect of the prophylactic use of Syzygium cumini upon the diabetogenic efficiency of alloxan in rats. An infusion prepared with dried leaves of the plant was offered instead of water during 16 days prior to the administration of alloxan. After 16 days of treatment blood glucose was elevated in treated animals as compared to water fed controls (p< 0,004). After induction, blood glucose levels rose 49.86 ± 20.34% in treated animals and 177.96 ± 47.30% in the control group (p< 0.03). The results suggest that the ad libitum ingestion of the infusion has a hyperglycemic effect in non-diabetic rats and a protective effect against the diabetogenic action of alloxan.
