| Abstract | CONTEXT Acute intoxication constitutes a public health problem worldwide, with an annual prevalence of 0.83% of all emergency assistance being attributable to it specifically. The PAHO has thus, made it a priority to gather data relating to intoxication as a means of understanding the scope of the problem. It is understood that the magnitude of the issue is larger than what is currently known. In spite of this, in Ecuador efforts to gather data, analyze it and organize a prevention system against acute intoxication have been scant. OBJECT To describe the demographic and etiologic characteristics of patients attending emergency services with an acute intoxication diagnosis at the Eugenio Espejo Hospital between 2009 and 2013. MATERIALS AND METHODS We gathered the clinical cases of adult patients (over 18 y.o.a) attending emergency services for acute intoxication from January 2009 to December 2013. We performed a retrospective, observational analysis, thus obtaining the required data (demographics, toxics, etc), and drafted a survey. RESULTS Out of 449 patients diagnosed as being acutely intoxicated, we found that the most frequently affected age group is the one consisting of young adults aged 18 29 --with 74.6 %. The most commonly used toxics are cholinesterase inhibitors at 21.4 %. After performing data analysis there appears to be no correlation between age and the toxic involved. CONCLUSIONS Important epidemiological data was obtained. This information can be used to adequately treat and prevent cases of acute intoxication. |
