| Abstract | Although Abbot Suger, with his ambitious attempt to reconstruct the occidental façade (1140) and the apse of the Saint-Denis basilica, marks the introduction of profound changes in architecture and in sculpture, the reflections in regard to the time of transition from Romanesque to Gothic art are mostly dominated by the influence of the Royal Portal of Chartes. The portal of Notre-Dame at Vermenton is one such example that illustrates the extend to which the complexity of iconographic and stylistic influences is underestimated for that period. The following thesis is presented in three parts. Since the history of the city as weil as that of the monument itself can only provide general information about the historical context of the portal and its creation, it is indeed the analysis of the iconographical program that can give a hint concerning the possible owner of the parish church (the chapter, the abbey of Molesme and the counts of Auxerre-Nevers) and thus can tell us something about the elaboration of the program and the financing of the construction. Although the Vermenton portal exhibits a rather mode st iconographic pro gram limited to the tympana, three archivolts, three capitals and six statue-columns the study of its themes explores sorne of their singularities as weil as their origins in order to offer a more complete interpretation of the whole sculpture. It is through examining the style and the form of the sculpture and comparing them to other monuments that we can distinguish between the influences of the new concepts, which originate in the Île-de-France (as the statue-column) and the continuation of the Burgundian Romanesque traditions. According to these considerations, we can conclude that the execution of the Vermenton portal took place between 1160 and ] 170. |
