| Abstract | Objectives: Autism has received special attention in further research of the scientific community. The number of publications increased by approximately 600% after 2000.The research involves several subareas of this condition however, old beliefs still holds even among health professionals. The objective of this study was to evaluate the knowledge of medical students about autism. Methods: We used a structured interview with 10 questions used in previous studies conducted in others countries, answered by medical students in first and sixth year in a University of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, totaling 104 e 48 respondents, the first and sixth years, respectively. Results: We observed a very low rate of correct answers on the issues and the means, the first and sixth year of 2,38 and 2,62, respectively. There was no significant difference between the successes of students in the first and sixth years of the Faculty of Medicine (p 0,031). There were rates as low as just one hit, the total of 152 respondents, about the diagnostic triad of autism, considered essential. Among the respondents of the first year, 98% believe that the autistic patient has criminal tendencies. Conclusion: The knowledge of medical students about autism in this sample is very low and not significantly improved during the course. It is important to reinforce training about autism, especially in health professionals. |
