T h i s i s due to them having a re g i o n of high e l e c t r o n d e n s i t y ; l o c a l i s e d u s u a l l y on a bare oxygen atom, which a l l o w s s t r o n g i n t e r a c t i o n w i t h the c a t i o n . The type of dipole p r e s e n t i s a l s o important. Thus, although a l k y l and a r y l n i t r o compounds have high d i e l e c t r i c c o n s t a n t s , c a t i o n s are poorly s o l v a t e d because the negative p o r t i o n of the d i p o l e i s d i s p e r s e d .
