| Abstract | Chronicle paediatric disease is a risk to a successful development of the child and a heavy bump for familiar well being and life. However, it is acknowledged that most of families are able to adapt themselves and live within normality standards. The aim of the present study was to deepen the knowledge about the parental experience of paediatric chronic disease regarding the assessment of parental stress, emotional disturbance, identification of coping strategies used and the parental perception of the child’s behaviour. It’s developed in the framework of a recent investigation about the experience of mothers of child with Cystic Fibrosis and Diabetes. From the initial sample (n=60), 30 mothers filled in all the questionnaires and therefore were part of the present study. Results show that these mothers reveal higher levels of parental stress in what concerns to Parental Health, Humour, Role Restrictions, Isolation and demands of providing care, and also symptoms of emotional distress, especially in the dimensions of Paranoid Ideation, Depression and Anxiety. The coping strategies that these mothers reported to use the most were Positive Revaluation and Planning problem-solving, and the less used Distancing and EscapeAvoidance. The dimensions of Depression and Hostility were positively correlated with coping strategies of Escape-Avoidance and Distancing, and higher the level of emotional distress symptoms, less they used strategies like Positive Revaluation. The results of this study strengthen the conclusions of past investigation about chronic paediatric disease being associated to increased levels of parental stress and about the relationship between symptoms of emotional disturbance and coping strategies used. The results also stress the need (on psychological appointments) to pay attention and give more importance to diversity of courses in the way of mothers of chronic ill children to achieve adaptation. |
