| Abstract | Although the bandwidth demand of broadband services has been tremendously reduced by video compression techniques the existing access network infrastructure represents a bottleneck for these services. As the network evolution should be adapted to the service demand hybrid fiber based architectures offer a high potential as a bridge or even alternative to Fiber To The Home (FTTH). In this paper broadband services are classified according to their bandwidth demand and Hybrid Fiber Twisted Pair (HFTP) based VDSL systems are investigated for the delivery of these services to the residential subscriber. Key requirements and performance in terms of bandwidth (Mbit/s) and transmission distance (km) of VDSL are given. Finally we compare HFTP based VDSL to Hybrid Fiber Coax (HFC) networks by mapping the service bandwidth demands to the capacities of VDSL and HFC. |
