Abstract This article summarizes and evaluates the role given to the Holy Spirit in Protestantism from the sixteenth century to the nineteenth century. There are divergent positions: the magisterial reformers fear to visible manifestations on the one hand, contrasting with the radical reformers desire for total freedom of the Spirit on the other. These opposite views continue throughout every century. The article also points out the relationship between deep spirituality, search for holiness, ethical interest, and missional dynamism, where the Spirit has been given a central role. Also, it shows the foundations of contemporary Pentecostalism, which isn’t a unique phenomenon in the history of Christianity. |
