| Abstract | This is a very interesting and well-written paper. It is the first attempt to identify in detail a particular nitric acid hydrate phase (NAT) by the aid of infrared spectroscopy directly in the stratosphere. Höpfner et al. have analyzed mid-infrared limb-emission measurements of PSCs by the MIPAS system during the Antarctic winter 2003. They have investigated a single IR band at 820 cm−1 comparing the MIPAS spectra with new refractive index data from lab measurements. They claim that this band gives spectroscopic evidence of β-NAT but not of NAD. |
