| Abstract | Solifluction lobes and lakes sediments in Sierra Ne vada are sedimentary archives that provide an estimated timing for Holocene climate variabilit y n this high semiarid environment located in the southern fringe of the Iberian Penin sula. The decrease of the organic matter content in the sediments extracted from glacial lak es in the southern slope of this massif suggests a decrease in humidity since the Mid Holoc ene that has not been favourable for vegetation growth in this area. Moreover, the distr ibu ion of solifluction lobes is also indicative of more arid conditions as these landfor ms have progressively remained only active at increasing elevations. This climate trend consti tutes a regional pattern since it has also been detected in other sedimentary records from the sout heastern corner of the Iberian Peninsula and northern Africa. |
