| Abstract | In regions with lower temperatures is not indicated to plant coffee cultivars with late and very late ripening cycles, because the harvest may coincide with the beginning of the flowering, which would damage the flowers, besides the risk of frost on the green fruits. In areas with lower temperatures or frost risk there are few cultivars with early (e.g., ‘Acaiá IAC 474-19’, ‘Icatu IAC 3282’, ‘IAPAR 59’) and very early (e.g., ‘Siriema’) ripening cycles, hindering the harvest in different times in coffee regions with average annual temperatures between 18 and 19°C. The aim of this study was to identify coffee genotypes with early and very early ripening cycles in Arabica coffee progenies, carrying C. racemosa genes. The field experiment was conducted at IAPAR and planted in September 2007, in Londrina, PR, Brazil. The experimental design was a randomized block design with three replications and plots with five plants, in the spacing 2.5 x 0.5 m. We evaluated 17 F1RC6 progenies derived from backcrosses of different Arabica coffee genotypes with one F2 plant of C1195-5-6-2 genotype, which carries C. racemosa genes. The checks of the experiment were ‘IAPAR 59’, ‘IPR 99’ and ‘Catuaí Vermelho IAC 81’ that are semi-early, semi-late and late ripening cycles, respectively. Yield, vegetative vigor and ripening cycle were evaluated. 10 F1RC6 Arabica coffee progenies, carrying C. racemosa genes, have potential to become cultivars with early and very early ripening. |
