| Abstract | ABSTR ACT. The retreat ofWurtenkees, a glacier of about I km2 in the Eu ropean East Alps, is described by measurement of frontal change, interpreta tion of m aps a nd a computed mass-bala nce series. Since 1850, Wurtenkees has been one of the most strongly retreating glaciers in this region. M ass balance has been measured since 1982. M easured values of the accumulation a rea rati o and the equilibrium-line altitude as well as a degreedays model are used for the description of the activity conditions of the glacier. Under present cl imatic conditions Wurtenkees would need a lowering of the mean air temperatu re during the summer season of 11.5°C to return to a balanced mass budge t. With predicted globa l warming, the glacier is likely to disappear early in the 21st century. |
