| Abstract | Introduction: The concept of Quality of Life includes the perception of the individual in general about cultural issues, habits and expectations. Some aspects, such as health, can interfere directly in this perception. Self-perception of the individual’s oral health influences the state of well-being and defines the demand for dental treatments. Objective: This research was carried out with the purpose of evaluating the self perception of oral health and its impact on the quality of life of the elderly members of UniATI (Open University of the Third Age) UniEVANGÉLICA. Method: The method consists of an observational cross-sectional study carried out at UniATI UniEVANGÉLICA, in Anapolis, in the year 2017, with the target population being the elderly who attend the workshops offered by the institution. The data were collected through interviews with the Geriatric Oral Health Assessment Index (GOHAI), used in research involving elderly patients, in which the patient assessed oral functional limitations reported by the patients. Socio-demographic data and the use of prostheses were also collected. The sample consisted of 43 elderly patients (response rate = 23.2%). Results: The following results were obtained: 65% were edentulous in at least one arch and 46% had partial removable prosthesis. The majority of the elderly (64%) made their current prosthesis in less than 5 years. Regarding self-perception of oral health, 60% of the participants classified as moderate. Conclusions: It is believed that the results are because the participants are independent and active elderly, who participate in physical, labor, intellectual and entertainment activities offered by UniATI. In addition to being rehabilitated, using their prosthesis, in function and aesthetics. This highlights the importance of discernment about the health condition of each individual, where self-knowledge allows a reflection in search of a better quality of life. |
