| Abstract | In traditional Africa a person has been regarded as "poor" when he/she does not have a family or is not socially accepted. By contrast, a person has been regarded as "rich" when she/he is married, blessed with many children and also part of an extended family and tribe. The economic aspect is not totally excluded, but it is not of primary concern as in the West where poverty is regarded as a lack of money, and wealth as material abundance. |
