Abstract	The classification of Mongolias steppes from the view of Russian and Mongolian geobotany For a long time the Mongolian steppe has been an object of research of Russian and Mongolian plant geography; the number of its resulting publications is overwhelming (comp. METELTSEVA 1986, HILBIG 1981, 1988 & 1991, DOROFEYUK & GUNIN 2000). Only few of it is known among Westeuropean readers due to language barriers. The present paper is an attempt to give an overview of steppe classification of Mongolia in the Russian and Mongolian vegetation science. In the first part of the paper physiognomic and floristic features of different steppe types with their distribution, dependence on soil types and climatic conditions is described. In the second part soil formation processes and their resulting soil types are given for every steppe type.
