| Abstract | Competitive adsorption between coumarin 314 (C314) and acetonitrile at the air–water interface was studied using second harmonic generation, taking advantage of both the surface specificity and molecule selectivity of the technique. The surface concentration of C314 was selectively probed at the air–aqueous interface. As acetonitrile was added to the solution it was observed that acetonitrile displaces C314 at the interface. The experimental results are well-represented by a competitive Frumkin–Fowler–Guggenheim (cFFG) adsorption model. |
