| Abstract | This paper analyses the letters sent probably (most of them, at least) towards the 1820's by a nun, María Jacinta, from the Capuchin c o vent in Buenos Aires, to a lay interlocutor, José Miguel de Tagle, and confronts t hem with those sent in-between 1575 and 1582 by Saint Teresa de Jesús to the disca lced Carmelite Jerónimo Gracián. Certain traits in the construction of the s lf present in Maria Jacinta's letters, which are absent, or found less continuous or intensely, in those written during years previous to her time by other nuns from conve nts in Córdoba and Potosí (also probably in one case) -among them: a visible and co nsistent "I" endowed with thickness, labile and close to the interlocutorin the fu∗ U n i ve rs i da d N a c io na l d e T uc u má n C o ns e j o N a c io na l de I nve s t i ga c io ne s C ie n t í f i c a s y Té c n i c a s . ture could possibly be related to what critical obs ervations and historiography point out about the emergence of new ways of repres nting subjectivity in Western culture and to the changes that took place in Bueno s Aires during the XIX 1 century. Yet, this paper proposes that these traits can also be related to, and, moreover, have certain points in common with some characteris tics present in the Teresian series written over two hundred years before. |
