Abstract	Leisure societies have been the most common form of sociability in modem Spain. However, the abundance of these institutions has not always generated the treatment they demand. The object of this article is therefore to define the field of study, and to assess the state of the scholarship to sketch the outline that future work should follow, and to emphasise the varied forms of recreational societies. The intention is to contribute to a greater understanding of modern sociability, and of course to the history of the daily life of the Spanish bourgeoisie.
