| Abstract | The freshwater shrimp genus Parisia was established by Lipke B. Holthuis (1956) based on specimens from subterranean waters of Madagascar. The genus currently includes seven species, all subterranean, four from Madagascar, namely Parisia microphthalma (Fage, 1946), P. macrophthalma Holthuis, 1956, P. edentata Holthuis, 1956, and P. dentate Gurney, 1984; one from Western Australia with two subspecies, namely P. gracilis gracilis Williams, 1964, P. gracilis unguis Williams, 1964, one from Luzon, Philippines, P. macrophora Cai & Anker, 2004 and one from Sulawesi, P. deharvengi Cai & Ng, 2009. While working on atyid shrimps from the Island of New Guinea based on specimens deposited in the Leiden Museum, a new species of Parisia was found and named after Professor Lipke B. Holthuis.
