| Abstract | 3. Objectives The design of a chemical process is a creative, ill-defined and very complex task, which is poorly understood. One long-term goal of this project is to get a better understanding of the design process and to make this knowledge available in the form of a computer-support tool. The elaboration of a model of the design process itself should be the first step towards the development of any computer environment able to support synthesis and design activities. In consequence, the proposal of a design process model is the main goal of the present project. To attain this goal, two prerequisites have to be fulfilled. First the knowledge about design processes has to be acquired, secondly a modeling language has to be developed which is capable of formalizing all relevant aspects. These two tasks are being addressed in this project as well. A chemical process running in a plant is a combination of physical, chemical, biological, and information-processing procedures that are performed to change materials in their chemical composition and properties to get a specified product. The goal of the process design activity is to synthesize the draft of a new or the modification of an existing chemical process and to achieve its realization in a plant. The initial problem specification for the design of a chemical process usually consists of one or two pages of information whereas the outcome comprises several ring binders. This range shows how much information has to be generated, considered, evaluated and eventually |
