| Abstract | Carbon isotopic composition (δ 13 C) in plant tissue is an integral index that provides information about past water status of the plant and gas exchange processes between the leaf and the atmosphere. For this reason, δ13C is also used an indirect index for water use efficiency (WUE). In this work, Pinus greggii var. greggii from three geographic origins and Pinus greggii var. australis from two geographic origins were grown under two water regimes: watering to 75% of available soil water (−0.03 to −1.5 MPa) every 14 d (NR0), and to 100% of available soil water every 7 d (NR1). After two years, δ13C in foliage was determined as well as growth in diameter and height, and aboveground and total biomass. Treatment NRO resulted in higher δ 13 C in all plants. Results suggest differences in physiological activity and WUE among varieties. The variety greggii showed higher response to changes in δ 13 C as the watering |
