Abstract	Estudo com objetivo de analisar a percepcao de idosos residentes em instituicoes de longa permanencia acerca da sexualidade na terceira idade. Foram entrevistados 28 idosos residentes em duas instituicoes de longa permanencia, no periodo de setembro e outubro de 2008, no municipio de Cajazeiras – PB. Apos a analise dos dados utilizando a tecnica do Discurso do Sujeito Coletivo verificou-se que o conceito de sexualidade abrange elementos que vao alem do ato sexual. A vida sexual na terceira idade relaciona-se as experiencias vivenciadas na juventude e percebidas como estimulo a vida. Observou-se que a ausencia de parceria sexual, o preconceito familiar e a falta de privacidade do local de moradia interferem negativamente na sexualidade do idoso. Conclui-se que, apesar dos idosos possuirem consciencia do desejo sexual na terceira idade, ainda persiste preconceito por parte da sociedade. Sugere-se que estrategias educativas sejam realizadas em comunidades a fim de esclarecer a tematica em questao. DESCRITORES: Enfermagem. Saude do Idoso. Sexualidade. ABSTRACT This study aimed to analyze the perception of elderly residents in long-stay institutions about sexuality on the third age. 28 elderly residents of two long-stay institutions were interviewed during September and October 2008 in the town of Cajazeiras – PB - Brazil. After it analyzes it of the data using the technique of Collective Subject Discourse it was verified that the concept of sexuality for the elderly covers elements that go beyond the sexual act. The sex life on third age is related to experiences in their youth and perceived as a stimulus to life. It was observed that the lack of sexual partnership, prejudice of family and lack of privacy where they live interfere negatively in the sexuality of the elderly. It is concluded that although the elderly are aware of the presence of sexual desire on third age, there is still prejudice of society. It is suggested that educational strategies are carried out in communities in order to clarify such issue. DESCRIPTORS: Nursing. Health of the Elderly. Sexuality.
