| Abstract | Background. Little research has been done on the subject of sexually disinhibited behaviour in nursing homes. Our knowledge regarding non-pharmacological interventions is limited. Furthermore, only a minimal amount of studies investigates whether nursing staff reacts differently to sexually disinhibited behaviour of demented residents than they would to somatic residents. Aim. It was investigated whether nursing staff reacts differently to sexually disinhibited behaviour of demented patients than of somatic patients, as well as if there is an association between the reaction of the nursing staff to sexually disinhibited behaviour and the perceived reaction of the patient. Herewith, this study aims to add to the knowledge regarding sexually disinhibited behaviour, which eventually can enhance patient care. Participants, procedure, design. A cross sectional survey was conducted among 214 subjects and their primary care givers in nursing homes across The Netherlands. Of the 58 somatic patients, 39 were female and 19 were male. Of the 156 subjects who suffered from dementia, 109 were female and 47 were male. The aforementioned patients were asked for their permission to take part in this study directly. For the demented patients, permission was granted by the persons primarily responsible for them. Measures. Data was collected using the Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) by Folstein, Folstein and McHugh (1975). The caregivers answered questions from the Questionnaire for Hypersexual Behaviour (van Hooren & Gijs, 2010); an adaption of the St. Andrew's Sexual Behaviour Assessment (SASBA) by Knight et al. (2008). In addition, data was collected from the patient's medical records. |
