| Abstract | Objetivo. Objective. The study evaluated the effect of dietary intervention on risk factors associated with diabetes mellitus and hypertension in elderly attended in the Family Health Program (FHP) in Teresina, PI. Method. A cross-sectional descriptive and analytical study was conducted with 34 diabetics and hypertensive patients of both sexes, aged 60 to 82 years, attended by two teams of family health strategy in Teresina-PI, and the data concerning the demographics and anthropometrics, biochemical levels and food consumption was analyzed. On the association between variables, the level of significance was set at 5%. Results. In the control group no improvement was observed in the studied variables at the end of the study, and a significant increase in glycated hemoglobin was evident. On the experimental group, significant decreases in the levels of fasting glucose (p = 0.004) and the percentage of glycated hemoglobin (p = 0.0004) were observed. In addition, average LDL-c were significantly lower (p = 0.03) in the experimental group compared to those of the control group. Other findings were also noted in the experimental group, as clinical improvement in body weight (reduction of 3.8 kg), blood levels of triglycerides (reduction of 54.9 mg/dL) and in blood pressure measurements (reduction of 12 mmHg in systolic and 4.5 mmHg for diastolic blood pressure). Conclusions. This study suggests that the diet prescribed for the elderly was effective in controlling fasting plasma glucose and glycated hemoglobin. Additionally, it resulted in clinical improvement of systolic and diastolic blood pressure, triglycerides and body weight control. |
