| Abstract | The paracoccidioidomycosis (PCM) is a major systemic disease affecting the lungs, and even after effective treatment leaves sequelae such as fibrosis and pulmonary emphysema. It is very important that the sequelae from disease be quantified with greater accuracy. Thus, the High Resolution Computed Tomography (HRCT) has become the diagnostic imaging test most widely used to assess the sequelae of the PCM. The computeraided diagnosis systems can help produce a more precise assessment of the sequelae (fibrosis and emphysema) caused by PCM. This research aims to develop algorithms in environment Matlab® capable of objectively quantify fibrosis and emphysema in patients with PCM. The algorithm consists of selecting the region of interest (ROI), and by the use of masks, density filters and morphological operators, to obtain the quantification of lesion area compared to the area of healthy lung. The proposed method was tested on 30 HRCT scans of patients with PCM. The results of objective quantification were compared with visual evaluations performed by specialist radiology, and showed a greater difference of 39.14% and 18.7% for fibrosis and emphysema, respectively. To validate the efficiency of the proposed method in this research, in distinguishing lung structures and conduct their baseline, we built a virtual phantom lung. The values of the composition of the phantom were compared with the values obtained by the algorithm, showing a difference of 11.5% to emphysema and fibrosis to 4.5%. In comparing the results of compositions of the phantoms with the visual evaluation performed by the radiologist, there was a difference of 40% and 23% for fibrosis and emphysema, respectively. The objective quantification of fibrosis and emphysema is the original PCM. The results show the feasibility and reliability of the method. It is worth emphasizing that the algorithms quantification of fibrosis and emphysema can be used in procedures for quantifying any diseases with such sequelae. |
