| Abstract | The planet Earth has been steadily undergone to deep changes. The rising demand for energy enough to supply both the economic development and the population growth, combined with the unsustainable use of finite resources and its consequent environmental problem, has arisen many problems which will affect all modern life traits. Based on the aforementioned frame, several surveys have sought to establish a relation between energy consumption and gross domestic product – GPD – that it is, it has been discussed how deeply the economic development has influenced the energy consumption. This thesis developed a benchmarking energy performance among developing countries taking into account economic growth, human development and sustainability, using a method called Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA). DEA method has as its own feature to enable the analysis of production systems with multiple inputs and outputs, as well both desirable and undesirable outputs. The developed methodology allowed us to identify the best results regarding energetic policy strategies and verify that different from developed countries whose structure has already been grounded, developing countries still need to keep their process of growth by making use of technologies and rational energy processes which were formerly conceived by the developed countries. Besides that, the path of the global society towards sustainable development involves the challenge of overcoming paradigms in search of new models which can be handled in a better way not only under the social scope but also concerning the environment. |
