| Abstract | The study presented here focuses the use of speaker -referent pronouns in Brazilian Portuguese (BP), taking into account social and linguistic con texts that commonly favor one of the variants. These pronominal forms, used in speech, c an denote greater or lesser degree of closeness, also serving as a strategy of indetermin acy (MENON, 2006) that is, a (specific) reference or properly generic. The diversity of use of second person pronouns is a common trait among romanic languages. However, BP is set a part from the others for not displaying a well defined limit between formality and non-formal ity, or between relations of greater or lesser closeness in the use of these forms of speec h. For example, speakers of French and Spanish distinguish, in a manner that is clear and marked socially, ‘informal versus formal’ and/or ‘closer versus distant’ uses of second person pronominal forms. In face of this issue, this work aims to present a possible distinction of speech forms perceived in the Brazilian vernacular particularly on the use of the pronoun s t and você in the Southern and in the Northeastern regions of the country, on regard to t he speech adopted by the natives of the capital cities that compose the sample. This work i s intended to offer an contribution to the knowledge of the linguistic reality of Brazil, also the main goal of the Linguistic Atlas of Brazil Project (in Portuguese, Projeto Atlas Lingüí stico do Brasil) – Projeto ALiB, to which this research is linked. To accomplish that, it is based on the assumptions of the Variation Theory (LABOV, 2008 [1983]), according to which lin guistic variation can be systematized, on the grounds of ordained heterogeity. Approaches in regard to the variable being analyzed, made under the same theoretical-methodological pers pective in capital cities and/or their outskirts (LOREGIAN, 1996, 2004; MODESTO, 2006), po int towards a shift between tu/você in an indiscriminate manner in some circumstances/a r as while in others one of the variants stands out. The diversity of uses in the speech for ms in BP does not fit in traditional description, an observation that has raised questio ns over the definitions and systematizations already postulated. From then on, the quantitative analysis of the data has taken place – followed by the qualitative interpretation of perce ntages and weight function, with the technical support of the program package of VARBRUL (PINTZUK, 1988). In this manner, 48 inquiries were analyzed, 4 of each gender distri buted by 2 age groups and 2 education levels, in each of the 6 capital cities that compos e the corpus: three Southern (Santa Catarina, Florianópolis and Porto Alegre) and three Northeast rn cities (Teresina, Recife and Salvador). Taking into account the evidence documented by the research, the hypothesis that the geographic factor intervenes more in the use of tre atm nt forms than social factors. In the end, having identified distinct uses of pronominal forms in the Northeastern and Southern regions of Brazil, it is believed that a contribution to th e knowledge of the diversity that composes the multi-shaped sociolinguistic scenario of the countr y. In a larger context, this contribution is aimed at a formulation of teaching and learning pol icies for the mother language. |
